When we finally got to the hotel, it was like unwrapping a present – and guess what? Our surprise was the incredible Hotel Electra Metropolis Athens. Stepping into this property was like entering a pure luxury and elegance. Discovering Athens in winter: your ultimate 48-Hour Weekend guide

Hey fellow travel lovers! I just had the most incredible winter escape in Athens, all thanks to the Greek Tourism Board. As some of you may have caught on my Instagram stories, Athens has been on my bucket list forever, but the twist? I never imagined it as a winter destination! But as the invitation sounded very captivating, I thought, why not experience Athens in its winter glory firsthand? I decided to go for it and let me tell you, it was a perfect choice for a winter weekend getaway! I am thrilled to share my unforgettable experience with you and give you the ultimate 48-hour guide to make the most of winter weekend in the heart of Athens. From historic marvels that left me speechless to discovering the charming corners, chic restaurants and cosy cafes to escape the cold. The guide below has it all!

How to get there

Firstly, let’s start with the fact, it is super easy to get to Athens from the UK. There are many direct flights (Five airlines currently offer direct flights to Athens from three of London’s airports). What’s even better? It won’t break the bank! Affordability is key when planning a weekend escape, and Athens delivers on that front. We flew with EasyJet airline from London Gatwick Airport on a Friday morning and flew back to London on late Sunday evening, which granted us an entire weekend for exploring this vibrant and captivating city. So, with easy access and pocket-friendly fares, Athens becomes an irresistible destination for that perfect weekend getaway!

Things to do

Visit Acropolis, Parthenon & Acropolis Museum

Begin your Athenian adventure by immersing yourself in the timeless allure of Acropolis and its accompanying museum. I highly recommend securing a guided tour to uncover not just the main attraction but also the hidden gems and stories and secrets surrounding it. The winter months, with temperatures ranging from 15-18 degrees Celsius, offer a more intimate experience with fever crowds. Set aside a generous 3-4 hours for its exploration and give yourself time to absorb the rich history and beauty of this ancient wonder.

Our guide shared a valuable insider tip- visiting Acropolis in the afternoon offers a more serene experience as mornings are busy with cruise travellers. She also suggested starting at the museum before heading to the Acropolis for a better experience.

As I stood before the historical marvel I had only read about in textbooks or learnt about at school, the surreal moment washed over me. It is really hard to describe- you just have to see it for yourself!

The Acropolis museum stands as one of the world’s significant museums, and I must admit, it defied my expectations. The modernity of the museum truly surprised me. The architects did an incredible job here. The clever use of glass paneling and the elevated design on this floor provide a seamless view of the ancient city of the Acropolis, with the Parthenon always in plain sight only 300 metres away. It is absolutely mind-blowing! PS. Don’t miss out on the best views – head to the Level Three for an unforgettable perspective.

Book a gastronomy tour

Take your taste buds on an adventure with a gastronomy tour with Alternative Athens – a personal highlight of my trip. This unique experience delves into the heart of Athens, unveiling hidden treasures in local shops and bakeries. From delectable breads and cheeses to exquisite olive oils and Greek pastries, each stop is a flavor-packed revelation. We also stopped for a real greek coffee in a hidden, charming cafe and tried Hoo Cut famous Pita Gyros, which was featured on a Gordon Ramsey TV show. I would never be able to find these cosy, local places on my own! Having a local guide made it super easy to discover these delicious treats while learning cool things about Athens culinary secrets and traditions. Highly recommend it.

Coffee break at Little Kook

Little Kook in Athens is a whimsical wonderland that turns every visit into a fairy tale adventure. Nestled in the heart of the city, this enchanting cafe captures hearts with its magical decor. Stepping inside feels like stepping into a storybook. It was the most festive spot we found on our short escape to Athens and we absolutely loved it. Make sure to carve out time for a coffee stop here – it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. It’s also a perfect place to cosy up after a winter walk. Pro tip- it’s less busy here in the morning! They open at 9am.

Lunch at Cherchez La Femme

Cherchez La Femme is a fantastic little restaurant blending classic and modern Greek flavours. As part of the Terrablue family, it reimagines the classical ‘kafeneion’ (coffee place) with a contemporary touch. Embracing traditions, valuing quality products and showcasing ecological sensitivity, this spot is a gastronomic gem. We had our first lunch here and we all loved this experience. From delightful maze-style dishes to an exceptional cup of a real Greek coffee and great service, everything was spot on! The interior of the place is equally inspiring, combining tradition and trendiness. With its warm ambience and thoughtful design, it adds to the overall dining experience. It is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic taste of Athen’s culinary scene. PS. When visiting, order their incredible octopus. I promise you won’t regret it!

Ice Skating and experience the Lights Tour at Starves Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre

Embrace the winter spirit at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, where you can lace up your skates and embark on a magical lights tour. Home to the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, this cultural hub, spread across 210,000 m² of park, offers a delightful blend of art, entertainment, and nature – all with either free or super affordable entry! Wander through the illuminated pathways and revel in the enchanting ambiance of this cultural oasis. This place is a perfect spot for families travelling with kids. There is so much to do here and the place is perfectly organised. Also, who doesn’t love a free ice skating session? Visit to this place is a must!

Chic brunch at Athénée

Indulge in a delightful brunch experience at the stylish Athénée. Once a fashionable hotspot for the rich and famous, this lovingly restored 1930s art deco restaurant is reclaiming its status as the go-to place to see and be seen! The food here is not just incredible; it’s a feast for the senses. Throughout the day Athenee caters to all culinary desires, offering plush brunches, modern Greek dishes, mouth watering pastries, and perfect cocktails ( My Bloody Mary was to die for). We opted for the Sunday brunch, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of fabulous! The vibe is everything; I absolutely adored the crowd here. Athénée isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life! Book your table now and thank me later! PS. This spot is also perfect for people watching! Everyone looks so chic!

Stroll around a hillside neighbourhood of Plaka

Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, Plaka is among the most ancient and charming neighbourhoods in Athens that absolutely stole my heart. I recommend taking a winter stroll through this enchanting, hillside neighbourhood that unfolds its charm with every step. Wander amidst colourful buildings, the narrow cobblestone streets, and discover vibrant local spots. Immerse yourself in the allure of unique shops, cosy cafés, and charming corners adorned with blooming flowers – it’s a genuine love affair with Athens. I fall in love with vibrant house facades, charming streets adorned in Christmas decorations, and the simple joy of people watching. We went on Sunday, and it was the best day for a stroll, feeling the real Athenian Sunday vibes.

Fine dining dinner at Makris

If you’re looking for a bit of extravaganza, I recommend booking a fine dining experience at Makris Athens by Domes, tucked away in the historic This, offering a front-row seat to the ancient market and the Acropolis. From the moment you step in, the ambience reflects history and charm. The restaurant has its own farm, at the foothills of Corinth, where organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, olives and vines are grown and then used to cook. You can be sure about the highest quality of ingredients. Choose from an 8 or 13 course tasting menu, over 250 wines and an incredible cocktail list. Each dish served is a true masterpiece and the service was just outstanding. Truly unforgettable experience. Have a look at the presentation! Wow!

Evening entertainment

If you’re in the mood for a lively spot to sip on some fantastic cocktails, Gypsy Jungle Bar is a top-notch recommendation. The vibrant and exotic decor immediately caught my eye, and the cocktails lived up to the hype. PS. Don’t miss out on their Greek sushi- it’s a unique twist. Another hotspot worth your night is definitely Juan Rodriguez bar. The place was buzzing when we visited on a Saturday night, with incredible vibes and music. Pro tip- Booking a table is a wise move, as it gets pretty busy.

As I wrap up this unforgettable journey through Athens, the city of ancient wonders and modern marvels, I can’t help but feel grateful for the moments that turned into lifetime memories. I am so happy I finally managed to tick this destination off my bucket list.

Athens emerges as the perfect destination for a winter weekend getaway, weaving together the warmth of its culture, the charm of its historic sites and its wonderful festive atmosphere.

Wandering through dreamy corners of Plaka, sipping winter delights at cosy local cafes, or exploring the magnificent Acropolis under a crisp winter sky, Athens transforms into a captivating escape offering a unique blend of history, culture, gastronomy and winter magic.

Whether you’re savouring exquisite dishes at Makris, dancing the night away at Juan Rodriguez Bar, or stepping into a fairy tale at Little Kook, Athens is a city that leaves a mark on your heart. It is truly a destination with a heart and soul that holds some secrets we will most probably never know…

I hope my ultimate guide inspires and enriches your visit to Athens this winter, creating memorable experiences and making your stay in this vibrant city truly special.

Until we meet again, Athens.

Exploring Capri Island: A Chic Travel Guide

I am finally back with the guide I’ve been promising you for a very long time. The chic guide to Capri, Italy- one of the most charming islands in the world. I know many of you are heading to this absolutely breathtaking island this summer and I decided to put all my favourite places together with the most iconic spots and practical information to make your upcoming holidays unforgettable and stress-free.

Where is Capri?

Capri is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino airport.

How do you get to the island?

The easiest is taking a taxi from the airport to Molo Beverello port (about 20 minutes drive) where you can catch a ferry to Capri. The ferry takes about 45 minutes and costs about 25 euros. You can check the ferry time schedule here.

How to move around the island?

There’s a few ways. You can move around either by taxis, buses or my favorite- by scooter or vespa! We have been renting a scooter at the same place for years and I thought it would be helpful to share. I recommend Noleggio scooter Capri by Alfano 1. You can rent at Marina Grande, Capri, and Anacapri. We normally rent from Anacapri.

Where to stay in Capri?

The island of Capri is divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri. People often ask what is a better place to stay. If you’d like to experience the real ambience of Capri island- the luxury restaurants, world-class shopping, night clubs and the famous Piazzetta, the best place for you would be staying around Capri town. However, if you’d like to experience a little bit less busy, more intimate atmosphere, while still not being far from Capri Town, I would suggest Anacapri.

From my personal experience Capri Town gets very crowded during the summer, so I really enjoy slower and quieter mornings in Anacapri, and then enjoying evenings in Capri town, when the temperature is cooler. It’s about 15 minutes by taxi from Anacapri to Capri town. It’s very easy to move between both places.

Villa Solage in Anacapri

This year I had a chance to stay at Villa Solage located in the heart of Anacapri. It was a very special stay as it was my birthday trip. My girlfriends flew over from London. It was their first time in Capri, so I wanted to make sure to show them the best of Capri. Villa Solage was the perfect choice. It is a charming villa in a typical Caprese Style. I fell in love from the moment I stepped into its lush green gardens, full of tropical plants, lemon trees , and olive groves. What an Italian dream!

This location required a special outfit!

The villa is located about 1.4 kilometers from the center of Anacapri. There are a few steps to take, but the breathtaking views and the tranquility are worth it. Solage offers accommodation for up to 12 guests. The villa is distributed on two levels. There are three bedrooms upstairs with the gorgeous balconies overlooking the greenery and the sea, and 2 bedrooms downstairs. Moreover, there is a gorgeous open-space kitchen and living room. Personally my favorite area in the villa. I found this space so inspiring. I loved the cozy fire place, the traditional ceramics, and coral decoration.

What’s also special about Villa Solage is the huge private pool and the terrace over-looking the lush greenery and the sea. For my birthday celebration the girls and I decided to throw a little pool party followed up by a magical aperitif on the terrace. We witnessed the most beautiful sunset! It was honestly spectacular! Felt so lucky to be with my closest friends on my beloved island. Couldn’t have imagined a better way to celebrate my birthday!

What to do in Capri?

Capri has it all! From iconic beach clubs, chic restaurants, fancy bars, to high-end boutiques, breathtaking landscapes and stunning beaches. I have been to the island about 10 times now and you can find my perfect Capri itinerary below.

Morning boat tour with Gianni

One of my beloved activities when in Capri- a private island tour with a skipper. There’s no better way to see the island! I really enjoyed admiring the absolutely spectacular views, swimming in the crystal clear waters, discovering magical caves while having fun, and catching some rays! PS. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen and a hat to avoid sunburn! For bookings click here.

Lunch at the Camerelle restaurant

You cannot miss lunch at the iconic and super-chic Le Camerelle Restaurant located at Via Camerrelle 81, in the heart of Capri. It’s only a short walk from the main Piazzetta. It’s a perfect place to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine under the Capri sun. I personally love sitting at their stylish outdoor tables and admiring the beautiful views. It’s also a perfect place for a people watch! The service and food are absolutely outstanding. If you area seafood lover like myself, highly recommend trying the seafood salad as a starter and seafood spaghetti as a main course. Alternatively, I also recommend the classic Gnocchi alla Sorrentina! So simple and so delicious!

Admire the views from Augustus Gardens

For the best views of Capri’s iconic Faraglioni rocks and Marina Piccola, you must visit the absolutely spectacular Augustus Gardens. I highly recommend visiting in the morning so you can experience the beauty of this place without the heat and crowds. I have been here so many times and I can’t get enough. Being there feels kind of therapeutic to me. Sitting on a gorgeous ceramic bench, in a shade, surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers and listening to the birds chipping. Did I make you dream already? Then check out these views! Truly unforgettable experience!

Soak up the sun at the Fontelina Capri Beach Club

There’s nowhere I was dreaming of visiting as much as the iconic La Fontelina Capri. I have seen the photos of this stylish beach club and finally this year I made it here! It is probably one of the most famous and prestigious beach clubs in the world, loved by the international jet set and many big celebrities. It is always fully booked, so please book in advance. What makes it so special? It is the only beach club where you can sun bath right opposite the iconic Faraglioni rocks. Imagine having a swim beneath the Capri’s pearl- Faraglioni. What a dream!

How to get there? You can either take a walk from the Piazetta on foot, via a little path that starts next to the Tragara viewing point and walk all the way down. It takes around 30 minutes from the main Piazzetta and it is quite tiring in the heat to be honest; however the views on the way down are spectacular. Instead, you can take the beach club’s shuttle boat from Marina Piccola ( about 7 euros per person, May 2022, price). What we did, we walked to the beach club on the way in, and took a boat shuttle on the way back. It was such a fabulous experience! We were sun bathing with my girlfriends on the stylish striped sun-lounger, sipping Aperol Spritz, followed up by a delicious lunch at their famous restaurant. Loved the experience. It’s expensive but super worth it!

Sunset cocktails at Capri Palace

If you’re looking for a chic and tranquil place for a sunset cocktail, I highly recommend a visit to Capri Palace Jumeirah in Anacapri. It is the best luxury 5-star hotel in Capri. I visited Bistro Ragù- their gorgeous panoramic terrace overlooking the spectacular Gulf of Naples, for a sunset aperitif and it was perfect! They serve some lovely canapés and the most delicious cocktails. I recommend trying their signature Limoncello Spritz!

Luxury Shopping experience

I believe there is nowhere as special to shop like Capri. The surroundings are just stunning! You can find the major luxury boutiques at Via Camerelle. Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Dior, LV, Fendi, Miu Miu, Valentino, Gucci and many more. Some of those brands also sell exclusive Capri collections. I am sure you have seen Dior Capri! So beautiful! But there’s so much more to shop at Capri apart from those famous brands. You can also shop Capri’s local products such as their famous handmade leather sandals decorated with colourful stones, unique ceramics (definitely recommend to have a look at Ricciocaprese boutique in Capri as well as Eureka in Anacapri), gorgeous Caprese style homeware ( I love Capri shop Art Work at Anacapri), perfumes at the iconic Carthusia, or the famous Capri Watch.

Golden hour aperitif at Il Riccio Anacapri

What’s more magical than a delicious cocktail or a chilled glass of wine with a view in a beautiful setting? I am personally obsessed with finding unique and luxurious spots for a drink and I found quite a few in Capri. My personal favourite is Il Riccio Anacapri. It’s a super chic beach club that overlooks the Blue Grotto from its absolutely spectacular terrace. It’s accessible either by taxi or a boat. What makes it so special apart from the breathtaking views? I love the design, furniture, stylish parasols, fantastic music, outstanding service, the eye to detail. Everything is served absolutely beautifully. And my favourite part? This beach club has been home to Dior who set up their amazing Dior pop-up store here! Yes, you can get a pic of a chic Dior Vespa! Oh my! I want one!

Alternatively, you can book a sun bed here or a romantic dinner. For more information and bookings click here.

Dine at Da Paolino Capri

I am sure you all heard about this absolutely gorgeous restaurant! This is where you can dine under the beautiful lemon trees – the symbol of Capri. It is located nearby Marina Grande- the main port. I can guarantee you will fall in love with this place from the moment you step in. The setting is just absolutely magical- both at day and night time. The food here is spectacular too! I recommend trying everything lemon infused – Tagliolini al Limone, Ravioli Capresi al Limone and my favourite Lemon Sorbet! Oh, take me there right now!

Watch the sunset at Lido del Faro

Dreaming of witnessing the incredible sunset in a beautiful setting? You can’t miss a visit to Lido del Faro. It is located just in front of Capri’s lighthouse. I absolutely loved watching the sun go down here. It’s such a relaxing spot on the island with such a great vibe. The music is fantastic too! And the sunsets here- wow. I was speechless!

I hope my Chic Guide to Capri will make your trip to Capri unforgettable! It is truly one of my favourite places in the world. I hope my recommendations will help you to fall in love with this magical island too!
